Chapter 2 of Henry’s Birth Story and Mum’s thoughts on booking a birth photographer

Baby Henry 6 months later

Little Henry, who was born on 29th March this year will soon be 6 months old and it was a great moment to catch up with him and his mum. I also took this opportunity to chat to Paulina to get some insight into what it’s been like to have me there and how she feels about her decision to book a birth photographer.

Birth story is an exciting one and it definitely needs more than just one chapter. That’s why as part of my birth package all my clients get a follow up lifestyle photo shoot for their family. It’s an opportunity to catch up, reminiscent and see how the family are doing with their new addition. It is also exciting to see the progress and growth and celebrate yet another milestone. Lifestyle shoots can be booked at family’s convenience any time within 6 months from baby’s birth. So you choose the moment that you wish me to come to visit you.

I asked Paulina a few questions and here are her thoughts.

Paulina, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m a mother of two children (a school girl Nina and my little man Henry). I am also a fellow photographer based in Launceston in Cornwall.

How did you hear about Aga and what made you choose her?

When looking for a photographer whose style I like it was pretty easy as I’ve been following Aga’s work on social media for a while now. I knew straight away that she is the perfect person for documenting birth of my son. I really liked the way she shows emotions and these volatile moments.  Also when I met her in person for a consultation I knew I made the right choice. I needed to know that the person that would be with me in the room in one of the most intimate moments in life  was a good match for me.

What convinced you to book a photographer for your birth?

As I focus on capturing emotions myself Birth Photography is definitely something that evokes lots of emotions hence my interest in this genre. But to me it was more than just a photo shoot. This was a moment I could not miss and I wanted to make sure it was also captured 'properly’. Moreover, as cliche as it sound I didn’t want to miss on the memories. And I’m so glad I booked Aga and she documented the memories for us.

What was your greatest fear / concern about booking a birth photographer?

Initially, I was embarrassed of what could possibly happen during the birth (my screaming etc.) and having a photographer documenting these moments was a big concern at the beginning. However I quickly realised that’s why I wanted to have a photographer during this time. To document all the pain, happiness and all the emotions from that event.  To capture not just a perfect baby when it arrived but the whole journey. The ups, downs, laughs, screems and then tears of joy. And this is exactly what I got.

What was best about having Aga with you on the day?

Having additional support when my partner was busy on his phone (Aga even documented this so now I can use it against him in arguments haha 😉 !) and of course having the photos and be able to look at them whenever we feel like reminiscent. Aga was respectful of my boundaries and only offered support and encouragement when I needed it and was OK with that. She let me and my partner experience the moments intimately and kept the distance when things got really intensive. Nonetheless, she still managed to capture everything in a emotive and tasteful way.

Do you remember much of the day and how it happened?

Well, it’s only been 6 months so I do remember quite a lot but with every month passing I feel the memory of that day fades more and more. I focus on here and now, on Henry’s needs and joys of our life with him and birth is becoming a distant memory. I think if I didn’t have these images to refresh my memory, by now I would have remembered very very little. The images help my memories stay alive, again as cliche as it may sound.

Which is your ONE favourite image and why?

Oh God, it’s really hard to choose just one but I think holding Henry straight after he was born is one of my top favourites 🙂

Now looking at these photos, a few months later how do you feel?

In one way I feel like it was yesterday but then I look at my almost 6 months old baby and I see how quickly the time has passed. I’m so happy I booked Aga and have the photos of that day and of Henry being seconds, minutes old. Looking back at the photos I always have tears in my eyes as it brings the pain and happiness of the birth.

What would you say to anyone hesitating about making the decision?

That’s simple – don’t hesitate. You will only regret not doing it. And don’t even think you can just take photos on your phone – the quality is not the same but what’s most important you don’t want to focus on your phone while your baby is being born. Leave this job to Aga 🙂
