Online viewing gallery? No, thank you.

Online viewing gallery used to be a convenient way to share images with clients, but especially recently it has become quite a risky option. Here I am explaining why.

Sometimes clients ask me if they can view their images in the comfort of their homes and choose images without coming to see me. What they mean is, they’d like me to send them a link to watermarked gallery so that they can make their choices. I only use this option for Christmas minis for the sheer purpose of time saving as if I had to meet with so many clients I would probably have to move to the studio permanently.

Today I’d like to explain why I stopped using online galleries, and I am sure, after reading it, you will understand things from my perspective a bit more.

1. Viewing equipment

I edit and show my images to you on a calibrated screen. What it means is that I used software which adjusted all the screen parameters to make sure real life colour representation. When you come to me to see your gallery I am sure you will see the most beautiful correct version. When you look at the images on your phone, PC or laptop they can appear over/undersaturated, under/overexposed, with dominating red, green or purple tinge. From my perspective it is a disaster as you are NOT looking at the image I created.

2. Customer experience

When you come for a viewing I can give you the best attention and customer service by discussing any requests or comments you have regarding the gallery. I often don’t notice things that clients are sensitive about. Sitting together and discussing these issues allows me to address them straight away.

3. Copyright

This one hasn’t been such a biggie until recently. With the ever so fast developing AI we are seeing computers replacing some of the aspects of photographer’s work. In particular there are better and better programs designed specifically for watermark removal. I don’t want to promote anyone or give you directions as to how to find the thieves who call themselves 'editors’ and specialise in stealing other people’s work and sharing for free.

However, I joined a few of such groups primarily to stay up to date with the recent technological developments and it made me furious.

I have never, well at least to my knowledge, been cheated by a client who screen shot the images and had the watermark removed but I’d prefer not to experience that. Imagine pouring all your heart, soul (and financial resources) into your equipment, props, skills and spending time editing an image that someone loves but doesn’t want to pay for. Even thinking about it now makes me so angry.

I always say that photography is a luxurious service and it is not for everyone and it is absolutely fine. But if you book a photo shoot, please make sure you can pay for it without looking for ways to cheat / get things for free.

At this point I’d like to thank everyone who actually come to the studio in Exeter from all over Devon and beyond. Your effort and understanding means everything to me and I am forever grateful for your cooperation.
